Finally, after two years of wanting to, we went to a Venezuelan Restaurant here in town. We were so excited! It wasn't Mexican. It wasn't Brazilian. It was Venezuelan! No matter how hard we try to make the food at home, we never make all of it at once, and we're figuring out the recipes because we didn't cook there, so this was definitely a treat.
It was rather a last minute idea. I was checking my email and saw that Restaurant.com was having a super promo, so I checked out the restaurants close to us and there was Miguelito's. We got a certificate super cheap and that was all it took to convince us to go. It was meant to be.
So we loaded up the kids and drove up to the restaurant. It was in an small, older house. Brightly painted with tons of Venezuelan souvenirs, posters, flags, you name it. When we saw the menu we went a little crazy, because of course, we wanted everything: cachapas, empanandas, arepas, pabellon criollo (that's the traditional dish with black beans, rice, shredded meat and some fried plantains - pictured above), malta, and quesillo (flan). It was great. The kids loved it and we ate like crazy. We didn't really end up saving much money with our cheap certificate because we ordered so much, but I think once every 9 years (we both came home in 2000) justifies it. :)
(I wanted to take a picture when we got there, but Billy said let's try the food first, and of course when we left it was dark. Maybe next time.)
